Pickleball doubles vs singles
The court is the same size for both, but the serving rotation, the positioning, the tactics and the fitness demand are entirely different.

Almost all pickleball played in Malaysia is doubles. It is more sociable, less punishing in the heat, and four people fit on one expensive court. But singles is a genuinely different sport played on the same rectangle, and worth understanding.
The rules that change
| Doubles | Singles | |
|---|---|---|
| Court size | 44ft × 20ft | 44ft × 20ft — identical |
| Score call | Three numbers | Two numbers |
| Servers per turn | Two, then side-out | One, then side-out |
| Server position rule | Based on your team's score | Based on your own score |
| Receiver position | Diagonal, partner anywhere | Diagonal, decided by server's score |
| Two-bounce rule | Applies | Applies |
| Kitchen rule | Applies | Applies |
Serving in singles
Singles has no second server, so the score call is just two numbers — yours then theirs. Your serving position follows your own score: even number, serve from the right; odd number, serve from the left.
The receiver positions themselves according to where the server is standing, which is itself determined by the server's score. In practice you learn this in two games.
How the tactics diverge
This is where the two formats stop resembling each other.
Doubles is a soft game
Both teams want to be at the kitchen line. Once all four players are there, the game becomes a dinking exchange where the objective is to force an opponent to pop the ball up so you can attack it. Power is a liability — hard shots at the kitchen come back faster than you can react.
The critical skill is the third shot drop: a soft shot from the baseline that lands in the opponent's kitchen and lets you advance to the net.
Singles is a running game
With no partner covering half the court, you cannot camp at the kitchen — a passing shot down either sideline will beat you. Singles is played much deeper, with hard drives to the corners and a serve-and-recover rhythm closer to tennis.
Fitness dominates. A singles game to 11 in Malaysian heat is a genuinely demanding workout, and on an outdoor court at midday it is unwise.
Which should you play?
| If you want… | Play | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A social game and a chat | Doubles | Four people, short points, low fitness barrier |
| A hard workout | Singles | Constant movement, long court coverage |
| To improve touch and control | Doubles | Dinking builds soft hands faster than anything else |
| To improve drives and fitness | Singles | Rewards power, depth and movement |
| To play in Malaysian heat | Doubles | Rest between points, shared court coverage |
| To enter a tournament | Doubles first | Most Malaysian events are doubles-heavy |
Skinny singles
A useful middle format: singles played on half the court width, diagonally. It keeps the movement demand manageable while sharpening consistency and shot placement. Many Malaysian coaches use it as a drilling format because it produces far more repetitions per minute than full singles.
If you play doubles socially and want to improve quickly, skinny singles with one partner for thirty minutes is one of the highest-value drills available. See how to improve for a full practice structure.
Frequently asked questions
Is a pickleball court the same size for singles and doubles?
Yes. Both formats use the full 44ft by 20ft court. This differs from tennis, where singles is played on a narrower court, and it is what makes singles pickleball so physically demanding.
How does singles pickleball scoring work?
Two numbers instead of three — your score then your opponent's. There is no second server, so no server number is called. Serve from the right when your score is even and from the left when it is odd.
Is singles or doubles pickleball harder?
Singles is far more physically demanding because one player covers the full court. Doubles is more technically demanding at the net, where dinking exchanges require touch and patience that singles rarely tests.
What is skinny singles in pickleball?
Singles played on half the court width, usually diagonally. It reduces the running demand while still creating long rallies, which makes it an efficient practice format for improving consistency and placement.
Which is more popular in Malaysia, singles or doubles?
Doubles, overwhelmingly. It is more sociable, easier in the heat, and makes better use of limited court availability. Most Malaysian tournaments are also doubles-focused.
