Pickleball scoring is the part that makes new players hesitate before serving. It is not complicated — it is just unfamiliar, because almost no other racquet sport still uses side-out scoring.

Side-out scoring

Only the serving side can score. If you are receiving and you win the rally, you do not get a point. You get the serve, which is your opportunity to start scoring.

This makes games longer and comebacks more common than rally scoring would. It also means holding serve matters enormously — a team that keeps faulting on serve simply never scores.

The three-number call in doubles

Before every serve you say three numbers out loud.

Your team's score.
The opposing team's score.
Server number — 1 or 2. Whether you are the first or second server on your side for this turn.

So "7-4-2" means your side has 7, theirs has 4, and you are the second server. If you lose this rally, the serve goes to the other team.

The two-server rotation

Each team gets two servers per turn, except at the very start of the game. When the first server faults, the serve passes to their partner. When the second server faults, the serve goes to the opposing team — that is the side-out.

Serving players switch sides with their partner after each point they win, so the server always serves from the right when their team's score is even and from the left when it is odd. Receivers do not switch.

The even-odd shortcut

If you forget where to stand, look at your own team's score. Even number, serve from the right. Odd number, serve from the left. This holds for the whole game.

Why the game starts at 0-0-2

At the start of a game, the serving team gets only one server before handing over. Calling it "0-0-2" signals that you are effectively already on the second server — lose the rally and the serve goes across immediately.

The purpose is fairness. Without it, the team serving first would get two servers before the other side got a single serve, which is a measurable advantage over an 11-point game.

Rally scoring

Rally scoring awards a point on every rally regardless of who served. It makes match length predictable, which is why some leagues and televised formats use it. Games are usually to 15 or 21 with a two-point margin.

Unless you are told otherwise, assume side-out scoring at a Malaysian venue. If you are entering a tournament, check the format in the entry rules — it will be stated.

Singles scoring

Singles is simpler: two numbers, your score and theirs, because there is no second server. Server position still follows the even-right, odd-left rule based on your own score. See doubles versus singles.
